Four decisions before comparing 3-ton offers
Normalize the unit
A 6,000 lb quote is about 278 kg below a 3,000 kg class. Specify kilograms and pounds together.
Require a model chart
One published near-3-ton model has different flat and round ratings. A capacity headline cannot replace the application chart.
Check the whole suspended load
Magnet and rigging mass use hoist capacity too. Ask for actual equipment mass before ordering.
Match evidence to the device
Design criteria and operating / inspection rules have different scopes. Specify both the relevant edition and model documentation.
| Listing description | Mass equivalent | Purchase implication |
|---|---|---|
| 3 metric tonnes | 3,000 kg ≈ 6,614 lb | State this exact class when the requirement is 3,000 kg. |
| 3 US short tons | 6,000 lb ≈ 2,722 kg | Do not substitute for a 3,000 kg application. |
| 6,600 lb | ≈ 2,994 kg by unit conversion | Slightly below 3,000 kg; use the manufacturer’s marked rating. |
A real model chart explains why the headline is insufficient
The IMI PNL6600 is reference equipment from another manufacturer, not a LiftMagnetics product offer. Its published manual labels the flat rating as 6,600 lb (2,993 kg). Keep those published values intact; they are not a claim of an exact 3,000 kg rating. IMI PowerLift manual 900210 (10/22), pp. 1–2
| Condition in the manual | Published entry | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Flat plate, 2 in (50.8 mm) | NA | The manual marks this combination not applicable. Do not interpolate a capacity. |
| Flat plate, 3 in (76.2 mm), listed sheet length 10 ft | 6,600 lb (2,993 kg) | Model-specific maximum in the stated conditions; not a universal minimum thickness. |
| Round material | 3,300 lb (1,496 kg); diameter / wall: CF | Consult the factory for the section. Flat WLL cannot be used. |
NA means not applicable and CF means consult the factory in the IMI PowerLift product page. Catalogue dimensions, material condition and operating instructions remain part of the rating. We have no verified LiftMagnetics PML-3000 thickness curve to substitute into a calculator.
Turn application uncertainty into supplier questions
| Workpiece condition | Evidence to supply | Action before selection |
|---|---|---|
| Thin, long or flexible plate | Length × width × thickness, weight, flatness and lifting points | Ask for sag, peel and single-sheet review; consider a purpose-designed thin-plate or beam arrangement. |
| Round bar or hollow pipe | Outside diameter, length, wall section, centre of gravity | Require a round-load chart and stable arrangement for that exact section. |
| Paint, mill scale, rust or rough contact | Photos, coating / gap measurements and pole contact area | Obtain model-specific acceptance criteria or approved surface preparation. |
| Alloy, hardened steel or cast iron | Material certificate and heat treatment | Request manufacturer confirmation; do not apply a generic permeability multiplier. |
| Warm or hot stock | Measured temperature and duty cycle | Use the exact model’s temperature envelope; do not assume all NdFeB grades share one limit. |
| Non-magnetic material | Material specification | Review clamps, slings or a suitable vacuum system instead. |
The manual describes performance sensitivity to material, surface and section; it does not justify universal factors for unrelated magnets. IMI PowerLift manual 900210 (10/22), pp. 1–2. The tool records these conditions for review and leaves application WLL unverified.
Choose a technology by the work cycle and control requirements
Use this editorial procurement matrix to decide which specification to request. Technology names alone do not establish retention, safety performance or a 3-ton rating.
| Technology / alternative | When to request it | Evidence and cost trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual permanent magnet | Accessible handle and a documented fit for the workpiece | Check handle clearance, interlock, actual operating effort and inspection instructions; assess operator time. |
| Electro-permanent system | Remote switching or an integrated production workflow | Ask for switching-power requirements, retained-load behaviour, controller checks and commissioning cost. |
| Battery / mains electromagnet | Powered control is part of the engineered lifting system | Request duty cycle, power-loss response, backup / monitoring and maintenance costs. |
| Clamps, slings, vacuum or a beam system | Magnetic contact cannot be established or the workpiece needs other support | Confirm material compatibility, edge / contact access, load sharing and handling constraints. |
For a concrete manual design example, Eclipse documents manual switching and handle locking features on Eclipse Magnetics Ultralift Plus. Those features and its product range must not be assumed for every PML listing. Request the proposed model’s manual and a demonstration under agreed conditions.
Specify standards without confusing the test methods
| Document | What the public source establishes | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| ASME B30.20-2025 | Scope includes marking, inspection, testing, maintenance and operation of below-the-hook devices. | Applicable magnet provisions, operating manual, inspection plan and agreed test evidence. |
| ASME BTH-1-2023 | Design criteria used in conjunction with B30.20. | Manufacturer design basis, category / service class where applicable, and relevant edition. |
| BS EN 13155:2020+A1:2025 | BSI lists this adoption for non-fixed lifting attachments. | Destination-specific conformity documentation and the edition contracted for the equipment. |
| OSHA 1910.179 | Rules for overhead / gantry cranes; load includes total weight on the hook. | Hoist and rigging capacity check. Crane test requirements are not magnet pull-off certification. |

Pull-off force, proof load and design category answer different questions
Do not infer a universal 3.0:1 or 3.5:1 magnetic breakaway requirement from a structural design category. Specify the device type, test method, material, gap, temperature, rated load, acceptance criteria and applicable clause with the supplier and responsible qualified person.
The public summaries do not establish a blanket annual 9,000 kgf pull-off retest rule. Request the inspection and testing schedule for the exact model, use conditions and jurisdiction. A declaration without the agreed model evidence is an unresolved purchase gap.
3-ton price: request a comparable landed quote
As of October 28, 2026, this guide has no verified current LiftMagnetics 3-ton price, inventory record or comparable market dataset. Unit price, availability and delivery date are quote-only. The following is a buyer worksheet, not a market-price estimate.
| Cost or condition | Current status | Request on every quote |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment and controls | Quote required | Exact model, quantity, currency, included controller / battery / remote. |
| Test and documentation scope | Quote required | Included reports, application checks, optional witnessed testing and any separate fees. |
| Freight, insurance and packing | Destination dependent | Actual packed mass / dimensions, route, Incoterm and named place. |
| Duty, tax and clearance | Destination dependent | Importer responsibilities, classification and locally confirmed charges. |
| Commissioning, spares and warranty | Scope dependent | Training, inspection support, exclusions and replacement lead time. |
| Stock, lead time and quote validity | Unconfirmed | Dated availability, dispatch date, delivery terms and expiration. |
Compare totals on the same delivery and tax basis. For a hypothetical 2,400 kg workpiece plus 220 kg magnet and 80 kg beam / rigging, the static hook mass is 2,700 kg. These are example masses, not product specifications. Actual masses and the complete lifting arrangement still require review under the applicable hoist limits. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179

2,800 kg flat plate; a “3 US ton” quote
Given: The supplier means 6,000 lb, about 2,722 kg.
Check: Convert the marked class before discussing any application derating.
Decision: The weight already exceeds that nominal class. Request a different engineered selection; the quote cannot be accepted on its headline.
2,400 kg plate, 40 mm thick
Given: The nominal quote says 3,000 kg, with no thickness chart.
Check: The screener records the thickness and flags the model chart as required.
Decision: Nominal comparison is within class; application WLL remains unknown. Obtain a model-specific chart and workpiece review before purchase.
1,800 kg round bar; PNL6600 proposed
Given: The reference manufacturer lists 1,496 kg for round material, subject to section confirmation.
Check: Use the round entry instead of the 2,993 kg flat entry.
Decision: The proposed reference rating is insufficient. Ask the manufacturer for a documented alternative and stability review.
Conversion basis: NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C. Reference round entry: IMI PowerLift product page.
Questions buyers ask before ordering
Capacity and application
Does “3 ton” always mean 3,000 kg?
No. Three metric tonnes are 3,000 kg, about 6,614 lb. Three US short tons are 6,000 lb, about 2,722 kg. Require the exact WLL and units on the model documentation and quote.
Will a 6,600 lb magnet lift a 3,000 kg workpiece?
A 3,000 kg workpiece is approximately 6,613.868 lb, already above a 6,600 lb nominal rating. Surface, geometry and thickness restrictions may reduce the application rating further. Request another engineered selection.
Is 45 mm or 70 mm a universal full-capacity thickness?
Neither. The required section depends on the exact magnetic circuit and workpiece. The reference IMI PNL6600 table lists a flat rating at 3 in (76.2 mm); that value cannot be transferred to an unrelated PML-3000.
Can I use the flat rating for a pipe or bar?
No. Obtain the model’s round-load chart and the applicable diameter, wall thickness, length, surface and balance restrictions. Do not assume a universal percentage of flat capacity.
Tool and evidence
Does the purchase screener calculate a safe working load?
No. It converts units, compares workpiece weight with a selected nominal class and prepares an RFQ. The application WLL remains unverified until the exact model data and workpiece have been reviewed.
What if the material grade or temperature is unknown?
Select Unknown in the application details and send the RFQ for review. Supply the material specification, heat treatment and measured temperature before equipment is selected.
Can non-magnetic stainless steel be lifted magnetically?
Do not specify a magnetic lifter for a non-magnetic workpiece. Request an application review for mechanical clamps, slings or a suitable vacuum arrangement. A casual attraction test does not establish a lifting rating.
Is a breakaway test the same as a rated-load proof test?
No. Ask the manufacturer to identify the test method, conditions, acceptance criteria and applicable clause. A pull-off value under ideal conditions does not itself establish the WLL on your actual workpiece.
Price and purchase
What is the price of a 3 ton lifting magnet for sale?
A current application-specific quote is required. No verified LiftMagnetics 3-ton price list, stock feed or comparable market-price dataset is published on this page. Request currency, Incoterm, named place, testing scope and validity date.
Does a 3-ton hoist suffice for a 3-ton workpiece?
The hook carries the workpiece plus magnet, beam and rigging. Verify the total suspended mass against the hoist and all components. The tool does not calculate a hoist approval because equipment masses are not yet known.
Should I buy two smaller magnets instead?
Only after an engineered review of load sharing, beam geometry, individual device ratings and plate sag. Two nominal ratings cannot simply be added to approve a lift.
What should arrive with the equipment?
Require model and serial identification, the application WLL charts, operating instructions, the agreed test documentation and inspection / maintenance requirements. Resolve missing evidence before commissioning with the responsible qualified person.
Method, sources and limits
LiftMagnetics is responsible for this supplier-published guide. First recorded in this repository on October 28, 2026. Sources and the screener were reviewed on October 28, 2026. Request a correction through our contact page. Review again by April 28, 2027, or sooner if a cited model, standard edition or purchasing requirement changes.
The tool uses 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 in = 25.4 mm. It preserves the canonical metric values during unit switching and compares workpiece mass only with the selected nominal class. It does not model magnetic flux, multiply generic loss factors, certify equipment or calculate an application WLL.
The report separates published model evidence, editorial procurement questions and hypothetical examples. No supplier test curves, FEA results, market-price survey or verified case-study outcomes are claimed. Public standard overviews establish scope and edition only. The full standards were not assessed clause by clause.
